The participants highlighted characteristics typical of sexual violence, and adopted a group of nine main principles and approaches by which to combat sexual violence and safeguard its victims and support them. In order to ensure the implementation of the declaration, the workshop endorsed a proposal to set up a national network for protection against sexual violence in Jordan, and promote establishing similar networks in the Arab countries, as well as task the SIGI/J with the follow-up. |

“Violence Against Women from a Public Health Perspective” |
|
SIGI/J - the Arab Regional Resource Center on Violence Against Women (AMAN) held this Annual Arab Conference in Amman, Jordan, on 22-24 November 2005 under the patronage of Queen Rania. The conference discussed several working papers on the conceptual framework of health and violence against women. The participants commended establishing a linkage between the issues of violence against women and public health, as it helps draw attention to the considerable negative impact of violence, as well as widen the base of those concerned and engaged in fighting it. The conference adopted several recommendations that aim at boosting advocacy work in this regard, as well as combating violence against women. Participants at the conference included experts, academics, and representatives of Arab and international organizations and development agencies from seven Arab countries, in addition to more than 150 participants representing governmental institutions and NGOs. |
