Last Working Group Meeting

Berlin
, Germany, 23 – 25 February 2007
The EMHRN Working Group on Palestine/Israel and Palestinians had an efficient meeting in Berlin on 23-25 Feb. Four new member organisations (ACSUR, EEDDA, The Spanish Federation of HR Organisations and Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights) were welcomed. Since the colleagues from the Gaza Strip (Al Mezan Centre and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights) were not able to leave the Gaza Strip due to the Rafah border between Gaza and Egypt being closed, the group had to rely on a telephone meeting to get in contact with Gazan fellows.

The group stated the importance of recognising the Palestinians as one people and the Occupied Palestinian Territory as one territory, and not as two entities that are separate from each other.

WG members actively engaged in the meeting and came with plenty of constructive input to both the EMHRN and WG structures as well as to the current and future projects. The activities relating to Palestine/Israel and Palestinians for 2007 were identified at the meeting. The group aims at setting up a longer term work plan, something that will be worked upon during the year.

The group elected Stefan Luetgenau (Bruno Kreisky Foundation for Human Rights) a convener for the WG. Stefan will share his experience as a PIP WG convener with the other chair persons, political referents and project coordinators at the general meeting on EMHRN WGs on 18 March in Lisbon, Portugal. After the Lisbon meeting when tasks and responsibilities of the chair/convener will have been clarified, the PIP WG will put the issue of chair person on the next meeting agenda.
