A new report by the EMHRN concerning gender equality (*) revisits the
key areas of discrimination against women. It presents advances
supported by civil society to fight discriminatory practices.
The report shows that change is possible and necessary, but a strong
political commitment is needed in order to achieve true gender equality
in the region!
On the 14-15th of November in Istanbul, the Euro-Mediterranean
ministerial conference on Strengthening the Role of the Women in the
Society will adopt a 5 years plan for the promotion of women’s rights.
The EMNHR calls upon all the participants to:
• Confirm their commitment to the principle that women’s rights
should be dealt with according to international human rights
standards and not to “religious norms or cultural traditions”
• Urges their governments to lift their reservations to the Convention
on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination against Women
(CEDAW)
• Make gender mainstreaming an absolute priority at the national and
European level
It urges the European Union and the countries of the Euro-Mediterranean
Partnership to adopt the recommendations of the EMHRN report in order
to further promote gender equality in the region !
A EMHRN delegation will be in Brussels from the 7th to the 9th of November. It will be composed
of four women coming from Palestine, Jordan, Denmark and France.
