How come that you are the last Tunisian defender of the human rights not to have a passport? In general, one does not have much of explanations on what happens in Tunisia… but according to the few brief replies that I could obtain, it would act of a personal will of the Tunisian presidency… That goes back to 1996: this year, I had written in the French daily newspaper “ Le Monde” a text entitled “Bitter Tunisia”. it was the first time that the problems of human rights in Tunisia were exposed to general public. Until there, Tunisia was the example for France and for Europe whereas in fact, it was impossible for defenders of humans rights to give a phone call or a fax… this text was a first and that attracts me still today a behavior of revenge which I regret and which I denounce… What says the Tunisian authorities to explain their refusal to deliver you a passport? The Tunisian authorities deny the problem… the only time where a Minister of foreign affairs answered the question, he said that he was not well-informed… and it was perhaps true. since 2001 however, a committee for the restitution of my passport was constituted and we then learned that I was under two legal instructions which were used as base for my deprivation of passport… the problem, it is that I never received any notification for these investigations whereas everyone can know my address… I am not trying to hide from justice and I am ready to answer questions if i'm asked to... |
