Working Group on Women's Rights & Gender

Meeting with the Swedish minister for equality and integration on May 12, 2009.
The executive summary of the draft shadow report
was presented including the findings and recommendations, in addition to expectations of civil society organizations from the ministerial conference on the IPA in Nov.2009.

The Swedish Radio interviewed some of the researchers of the shadow report, the gender political referent, Magali Thill, and the coordinator Lina Al Qurah.

The interviews covered the findings and recommendations of the draft shadow report and illustrations on developments took place in Europe, Turkey and Mediterranean countries pertaining to political and civic participation of women, violence against women, commitment to CEDAW and national legislations.

It was played in P1 Morgon which is an important morning news program targeting decision makers and public interested in politics and international affairs. Please find below the link to the program

Working Group Meeting
   
Objectives

  • To make proposals to the EMHRN with regards to gender mainstreaming and specific actions for promotion and protection of women’s rights
  • To be a watch dog to ensure gender mainstreaming within the activities of the Network as well as on the organisational level of the EMHRN and its member organisations
  • To give expertise to the EMHRN on gender issues (women’s rights, parallel discrimination in the North and in the South in relation to migration etc)

 



 

Activities


The WGs current project consist in organising bi-annual workshops with the participation of the main networks in the region working on gender issues and women’s rights as well as generalist human rights NGOs aimed at discussing, monitoring and implementing the following:
  • An updating of the successful and widely diffused EMHRN report on women’s rights and advocating for the recommendations
  • Production of a training kit on gender mainstreaming to be used by local NGOs
  • Two sub regional training courses in gender mainstreaming
  • Monitoring of gender mainstreaming within the EMHRN organisations and executive bodies
  • Monitoring of gender mainstreaming of EMHRN activities
  • Producing policy recommendations on key issues relevant to gender equality in the region
