„Euromed – A Region on the Move“

Strengthening Civil Society and Gender Equality in the Euromed Region

Monday 2nd to Wednesday 4th June 2008, Gustav-Stresemann-Institut, Bonn, Germany

November 2006 for the first Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on “Strengthening
the Role of Women in Society”. They agreed to work within a common framework of action to
strengthen the role of women in the political, civil, social, economic and cultural spheres, as
well as to fight against discrimination – as laid out in the Convention on the Elimination of All
Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). A follow-up on the Istanbul Conference
will take place in 2009 to asses progress made in implementing the measures set out in the
framework of action. These political demands are supported by the EU Commission´s
thematic programme “Investing in People”. In 2008 the programme supports gender issues in
the Euromed region with 6,8 million Euro.
The WOMNET international conference will focus on the Istanbul Conclusions, review their
implementation and analyse the changes that have been achieved so far. The conference
aims to bring NGOs from the Euro-Mediterranean countries together to develop new
milestones and recommendations in order to sustain gender equality in the region.
Additionally, NGOs will receive information on goals, strategies and funding opportunities of
EU programmes. Strengthening the dialogue and the networks of Euro-Mediterranean civil
society organisations plays a crucial role during the overall programme of the conference.
Main goals:

• Mobilisation and participation of NGOs on the Istanbul Conclusions

• Further development and implementation of the Istanbul Conclusions

• Strengthening NGO-networks (Capacity building, Networking)

• Information on the EU programme “Investing in People” and regional programmes

and instruments (ENPI)

• Improvement of mutual understanding and exchange of information (intercultural

dialogue)

• Sharing experiences between NGOs from the Mediterranean region and Europe

• Networking between NGOs from new EU member states and the Mediterranean

countries
