Syrian Human Rights Defender Released on Bail

Copenhagen – Amman

The Amman Centre for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS) and the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) welcome the decision of the Syrian Supreme State Court (SSSC) to release on bail Mr. Aktham Naisse, President of the Committees for the Defense of Democratic Liberties and Human Rights in Syria (CDF).

At today’s session the SSSC decided that Mr. Naisse will be released tomorrow on bail of 10.000 Syrian Pounds[1]. The next session against Mr. Naisse is scheduled to be held on 24 October. The EMHRN and ACHRS will continue to follow the case against Mr. Naisse.

Attorney at Law, Mr. Mustafa Yaghi, who attended today’s session on behalf of the ACHRS and the EMHRN, reported that Mr. Naisse is weak and in very poor health. During his time in prison, Mr. Naisse has suffered from a stroke which has left him partially paralysed. In prison he has not been given proper hospital care nor sufficient medication. The EMHRN and ACHRS hope that Mr. Naisse will get proper care and wish him a speedy recovery.

Aktham Naisse, President of the Committees for the Defence of Democratic Liberties and Human Rights in Syria (CDF), a member organisation of the EMHRN, has been detained since 13 April 2004. He has been charged with “opposing the objectives of the revolution”, “disseminating false information aiming at weakening the State” and “affiliation with international organisations”.

The EMHRN and the ACHRS call upon the Syrian authorities to stop the harassment of, and to release all Human Rights defenders, prisoners of opinion and political prisoners.
