ATTACK ON HUMAN RIGHTS The Euro Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) finds the continuous brutal attacks on innocent people in the EuroMed region and beyond highly alarming. Ongoing suicide attacks, bombs and hostage taking do serious harm to human rights values, the most valuable being the right to life, and put peace and stability in the region even further away. The EMHRN condemns the cruel killings of civilians in the Egyptian cities of Taba and Ras al-Sheitan. It condemns suicide attacks on innocent civilians wherever they take place. It condemns hostage taking and killings as the ones ongoing in Iraq. The EMHRN further Friday 8 October 2004 forwarded letters to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, condemning the blatant violations of international law and attacks on civilians being committed by the Israeli Authorities during their current military campaign in the northern Gaza Strip which began on the evening of 28 September 2004. Working for the full realisation of human rights for everyone, the EMHRN sees an urgent need for serious joint efforts to ensure the respect for international humanitarian law and human rights. We therefore call upon: All states to root their response to the atrocities within international law, universal human rights values and respect for freedoms and the rule of law. All governments of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership to strengthen international law and its instruments as the only viable, positive and lasting alternative to violence and terror. We must not allow the perpetrators of terror against civilians to set the agenda and equally there can be no room for double standards in understanding and applying human rights, regardless of location, race, nationality, language, religion or sex; Our deep felt thoughts go to the victims and relatives of the atrocities committed.
