PRESS RELEASE, 27 January 2000 Euro-Med Dialogue with the Jordanian Government on Human Rights A high-level delegation from the regional human rights organisation, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network, Monday expressed satisfaction with the government’s keenness to promote human rights in the Kingdom and stressed the importance of the government’s pledge to rectify several legal gaps related to press freedom to go hand in hand with international law. At the end of a three-day visit to the country, President of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN), Abdel Aziz Bennani, noted that the EMHRN’s visit to Jordan was "extremely useful". He said, Prime Minister Abdul Raouf Rawabdeh pledges to publish the international covenants and treaties related to human rights, and which Jordan signed, in the Official Gazette. "It will be a very important step for Jordan, Dr. Bennani said. "Ratifying international treaties do not have a meaning if they remain ink on paper". Morten Kjaerum, a member of the delegation and the director of the Danish Centre for Human Rights, hailed the government’s stand to continue dialogue with the EMHRN especially in terms of enhancing press and media freedoms. The two-member delegation arrived in Jordan last week upon the government’s invitation to the EMHRN. The delegation met with officials, experts on human rights and non-governmental organisations. In 1998, the EMHRN published a report critical of the previous press law and presented in to the European Parliament. The Jordanian government pledged at that time to change the press law and ease the penalties that existed in the 1998 law. Dr. Bennani, who also presides the Moroccon Organisation for Human Rights, said that the executive committee of the EMHRN, which convened in Amman prior to the official visit, will be preparing a new report on the developments of press freedoms and the government’s actions in that regard.
