Unknown Persons Steal Address Book and Keys From the Hotel Room of Tunesian Human Rights Defender Mr. Khémais Chammari, former Secretary General of the Tunisian Human Rights League and former deputy of the democratic opposition in the Tunisian parliament, had his address book and a his keys stolen from his hotel room in Brussels. Mr Chammari participated in a seminar organised by the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights N etwork (EMHRN) in Brussels, financed by the European Commission, on the human rights dimension of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. Today, November 11, 1999, in the morning, Mr. Chammari discovered the disappearance of the address book and his key bundle which had been in his bag in his room at the Saint Nicolas Hotel. Once alarmed, the police made a verbal inquiry following this unacceptable and alarming theft. Before and during the seminar, the organisers were several times contacted by individuals known to be connected to the Tunisian authorities insisting on participating in this seminar. The EMHRN insists that the police will engage in serious investigations of this case. It condemns this act of unacceptable theft and its use as a means of pressure. The EMHRN regards this incident as yet another example of the serious threats against the security of Tunisian human rights defenders in Europe. |
