During the night of August 30 and 31, unidentified individuals broke into and ransacked the office of lawyer Ayachi Hammami in Tunis. The computer was wrecked and put on fire. The interior of the office was damage by fire.
Mr Hammami heads the Collectif 18 octobre pour les Droits et les Libertés and is secretary-general of the Tunis branch of the Ligue tunisienne pour la défense des droits de l’Homme (LTDH).
Ayachi Hammami has also been asked by the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network to prepare a report on the independence of the judiciary in Tunisia.
This act of arson took place one week before the lawyer is to give a presentation of a first draft of the report at a seminar in Paris.
M. Hammami has pursued his fight in favour of justice in Tunisia despite having been harassed by the authorities for years. However, with the destruction of his computer equipment and part of his files and the damage to his office, he’s no longer in a position to continue his work.
