The Challenge of Justice

Being one of the main institutions of the Rule of Law, Justice is both to ensure the legal security of the people as well as the respect of all their rights and fundamental liberties. Independence and impartiality institutions of law  are key elements in the development of democracy, the Rule of Law, a general human rights culture and good governance. Action in the field of Justice,
including the promotion of an independent and impartial judiciary, is thus a strategic priority of the EMHRN.


Justice Working Group

The South Mediterranean countries suffer from deficits in the judiciary systems. In most cases, the judiciaries do not assume their role according to the principles of the Rule of Law; they are institutionally allied to the political power in place whilst playing a complimentary role to the police in repressing rights and fundamental freedoms. For these reasons and as part of its activities, the Network has established a thematic working group devoted to the field of justice in the Euromed Region. Read more...

The concept of Justice includes a wide range of issues such as the independence of the judiciary and of the judges themselves; rules regarding fair trial; access to justice; torture and death penalty, etc. These subjects are fields of their own to which is linked a distinct body of knowledge.
