Working Group Documents

The functioning and the work of the Justice Working Group is based on several documents (some of them are still to be drafted), which set the framework and priorities of the WG.

Working Group Concept

The Working Group on Justice in the Euro-Mediterranean region aims at promoting and protecting international human rights standards on justice in the Euro-Mediterranean region, in particular on the issues of the independence and impartiality of the judiciary and equal access to justice. Following a thorough consultation process involving legal experts from the North and the South, members of the working group and resource persons from the region, it has published a report Justice in the South and East of the Mediterranean which was highly praised – both for its methodology and for its content.

In order to capitalize and follow-up on the work already done, funds have now been secured in order to launch a project which overall objectives is to support the development of spaces for free debate between key actors concerning the independence and impartiality of the judiciary. The project aims in particular at presenting the regional report in several countries of the region; stimulating the drafting of national reports by civil society actors aimed at promoting reform of the judiciary in these countries and in the region as a whole; mapping the existing initiatives related to the reform of the judiciary in the region and; presenting the final results of the project at a regional seminar in order to raise awareness about the insufficiencies and shortages of the judiciaries of the region with the aim of influencing or encouraging the reform process.
