Election of the management and choice of Amman as its headquarters
Conclusion of the work of the constituent Conference of the Arab Association for Academic Freedom
The meetings of the constituent assembly of the Arab Association of Academic Freedom were concluded in the capital city of Amman. A total of 35 founding members of university professors from 17 Arab countries participated in the meetings. During the meetings, the Articles of Association of the Arab Association for Academic Freedom was discussed and the document of strategies was approved.
Using as a guide the Amman Declaration of Academic Freedoms in the Arab universities and the relevant international declarations, the participants in the conference defined the goals of the Association as defense of academic freedom, guaranteeing the freedom and independence of universities, and refraining from violating these freedoms under any excuse or means.
Other goals were identified as seeking to consolidate the freedom of scientific research and to deepen knowledge through laws and legislation that can eliminate the obstacles that stand in the way of consolidating this freedom and deepening this knowledge.
The goals also included the strengthening and upgrading of the legislative reforms in the academic field, developing academic cooperation among the Arab countries, and utilizing the positive and successful experiences on government and non-government levels by coordination and cooperation with the Arab League, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [UNESCO], the Arab League for Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [ALESCO] and the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [IESCO], the Network for Education and Academic Rights [NEAR], Scholars at Risk [SAR].
The goals also included work for adapting the university curricula in the manner that guarantees the freedom of scientific research and its dissemination, the freedom of access to information, the freedom of opinion and expression and the freedom of creed within the campus.
Finally, the goals included work for raising the professional competence, experience and knowledge of instructors at universities.
The Council of the Association was elected of 25 members from the following 17 Arab states: Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Egypt, Libya, Sudan, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania.
An executive committee was elected for the Association of the following 11 members: Dr. Nizam Assaf of Jordan, Dr. Ahmad Thabit of Egypt, Dr. Imhamet al-Maliki of Morocco, Dr Tahir Bumadrah of Algeria, Dr. Mary Ghantus of Lebanon, Dr. Sherzad El Najjar of Iraq, Dr. Nazim El Sharri of Iraq, Dr Abdul Majeed Suwaylim of Palestine, Dr. Huda El Mataw’ah of Bahrain, Dr. Muhammad El Tarawneh of Jordan, and Dr. Lubna Akroush of Jordan. Dr. Nizam Assaf was elected as President of the League.
