ACHRS Publicizes Regional Report on Death Penalty
The Amman Center for Human Rights Studies is proud to announce its first published report, with a unique overview, on the death penalty in the Arab world in 2006. The report applies a comparative methodology and examines both the judicial background for the use of the death penalty in various countries, but delivers a detailed insight into the current status of particular case studies. Introduction
The right to life and the right not to be subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment are enshrined in international standards, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). The Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights is the most important treaty whereby states commit themselves to not having the death penalty. ACHRS opposes and campaigns against the death penalty in all cases and wherever it is used, considering it a violation of the right to life and the ultimate form of inhuman, cruel and degrading punishment. In doing so, the organization in no way condones violent crime or questions the responsibility of governments to ensure that those who commit such crimes are brought to justice, though in carrying out this responsibility governments must abide by relevant international law and standards, including the abolition of death penalty and prohibition of torture. Besides, it must be said that as long as the death penalty is maintained, the risk of executing the innocent can never be eliminated… To read the full report click here: http://www.achrs.org/english/pdf/DeathPenalty.pdf
