Justice in the South and East of the Mediterranean Region

The report assesses the state of justice in the Southern Mediterranean countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia. The report measures the disparity between the reality of the systems of justice and the international standards of justice. In particular, it describes the incorporation of international standards into the legal systems of the countries concerned and their progress towards formal, institutional development of the rule of law and democracy. The report was edited and reprinted in 2006 in the framework of a 2006-2007 project carried out by the EMHRN Working Group on Justice aimed at looking at the independence and impartiality of the judiciaries in the countries of the region. The version available her is the most recent one. Modifications were made to the original version regarding the general presentation and layout of the report as well as the numbering of pages and footnotes. Printing errors have been rectified as well. No other substantial changes were made to the content of the report.
